Cheryl Granger is a ball of energy and an outspoken cheerleader for Louisiana’s seafood industry. I first met Cheryl on the back carport of her home in Maurice, LA, where she sets up shop to sell the shrimp that her husband Al hauls in from Vermilion Bay. This is a carefully orchestrated operation that runs like clockwork: catch, contact, and collect.
Al fishes during the week on their boat the Miss Brittany G out of Intracoastal City and calls his wife with an update on the week’s catch. Cheryl posts the information as an update on the Louisiana Direct Seafood website so that folks will know when the catch is coming in. And then customers phone Cheryl for the size and price of the day’s catch. All that’s left is collecting the cash for an honest day’s work. It works. It works beautifully.
All along Louisiana’s coast, there are fishing families like the Granger’s that are making a living by bringing the bounty of our Gulf waters to the tables of cooks everywhere. I’ve long since advocated to “buy local,” and there is nothing more local than shaking the hand of the fisherman that caught your dinner.
